As a part of our regular school routine we practice fire drills and other emergency drills. As a School District we will be practicing what we refer to as Lock Down drills. The District has designated the week of January 21, 2013 as a time when all of our schools will be practicing a lock down drill.
Lock Down drills provide students and staff with a plan in the event that an intruder enters the building making our hallways unsafe. This threat requires students and staff to stay where they are or, if in hallways or bathrooms to go directly to the nearest occupied classroom. Students will then be directed to move to a safe area of the classroom.
So that we don’t alarm the children, our staff will use the following language in explaining the drills: “Lock Down” is when the hallways may be unsafe and we need to stay together in the classroom. If you choose to speak with your child about this drill, we would encourage you to use the same language at home. Once this is rehearsed a few times, it will become much more comfortable for the students.
