On Saturday, May 22, 2010, Chatham Park School will be hosting the 12th annual Maniac Magee Run for the Homeless at 9 a.m. All proceeds are donated to the Norristown Salvation Army. More than $55,000 has been raised in the last 11 years. Let’s make this year even bigger!

You can help by …

Taking part in the 2-mile race or 1-mile walk through the Chatham Park neighborhood. It’s a great first race for new runners and for families looking to run or walk together. Race Fee is $15 per individual or $45 per family through May 16. From May 17 to 21, the fee is $18/individual or $50/family.

Becoming a sponsor. We know many of you and your families and friends own businesses and provide services to Chatham families. You can advertise for as little as $100. Get a sponsorship form and details from the Downloads section.

Reading the book Maniac Magee with your children as part of the Maniac Magee Reading Race to the Finish at Chatham Park.
Maniac Magee is a great book about prejudice and love and home and baseball and fear and understanding. Chatham Park Library has 100 copies available to check out. Written by Jerry Spinelli, who grew up in Norristown and later raised his 6 children in the Chatham Park community, the book tells the tale of Jeffrey Lionel Magee. At the age of 11, he goes on the run in search of a place to belong.

Children are encouraged to mark their reading journey with each section of the book and at the end donate items needed by families who stay at the Norristown Salvation Army. Find all the details, items needed by the shelter, and grade-level forms at the Chatham Park Library website.

Help is needed during Freedom Playground Build Week, April 20-25, at the new Park and Community Center at Haverford Reserve located between Darby and Marple Roads in Haverford Township. Work begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 9 p.m. each day! Lunch and dinner will be provided for free and free childcare is available for children 9 and younger. Children 10 or older can help inside the build zone.

For complete details and to volunteer, visit www.freedomplay.org.

You’ve got homework. We’ve got help – NOW 24/7. The Delaware County Library System now offers FREE help from real, live tutors via the Internet – either at the library or from home! The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Live Homework Help® is available for kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as introductory-level college classes and adult learners. This program connects students to a real live tutor. The service is free.

Students of all ages simply log on to the DCLS website and click on the Live Homework Help® icon. You’ll be asked only for your library card number, grade level and the subject with which you need help. Within a few minutes or less, you are connected to an expert tutor. Students can receive help in math, science, social studies or English. Tutors are trained and screened for safety.

If you don’t have a library card, get one at the Haverford Township Free Library, 1601 Darby Road (corner of Darby and Mill Roads). A library card is free and can be obtained by any Delaware County resident over age 17. Parents can get a card for children under 17. You just need to bring proof of your residence (driver’s license, lease, check showing your address) when applying. Go to the library’s website for complete information.

If you’d like to learn more about the program, please call DCLS at 610-891-8622 or visit the web site at www.delcolibraries.org and click on the Live Homework Help® icon. Funding for this service is provided by Delaware County Council.
