The class studied Alaska in social studies and read the book together. When Mrs. Saunders learned that White, who works for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, had moved to Pennsylvania, she invited him to come to her class.

The students got a first-hand look at equipment used to pull a sled and even got to try it on and pretend they were about to go on an adventure. White also showed a video of Foxy and his daughter Kelly as they romped through icy snow speeding down trails and winning races.

Students in grades 1 through 4 will have the opportunity to create a custom plate in February during Chatham Park’s Make-A-Plate project. An original drawing is turned into a 10-inch melamine plate, made for everyday use, which is dishwasher – but not microwave – safe. Cost is $6. Most of the work will be done in school.

First, your child should do a rough draft of a plate design at home.
Artists, please note:

drafts can be made on any light-colored paper using crayons, markers or colored pencils

final drawings will be done in school using only water-soluble markers

final plate drawing may be no larger than 10″ in diameter

name and homeroom (number and letters) must be somewhere in the design, even if it is written in small letters near the edge.

Second, send rough drafts and payment into school before Friday, February 6.
Please enclose:

rough draft of plate design

completed form (available from the downloads section to the right)

in an envelope marked “Plate Project” and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher before Friday, February 6.

If you have any questions, please contact Lillian Mittleman via email mittfam@comcast.net. If the cost of this project would create a hardship for your family, we have “scholarship” funds available.
